Well, it was back to Oakwell School for round 1.
What a transformation from last year. Suddenly the suicidally fast section from the finish down to the bottom of the course had been replaced with a highly technical section on grassland. Otherwise the course was pretty much as usual.
After a preride, I decided to run Dugast Rhino's instead of Grifo's. Grip was everything. After Paul's other half buggered us up by telling us that the start had been delayed by 20mins, which it wasn't. Starting from the back row from 103 was not a good start. Anyway, after the gun I quickly settled into a good rhythmn. At about half distance, I caught my mate who'd started on the second rank. I could see he was at 10/10ths as we crossed. It was kind of satisfying to sneak past him on a run up and then drive hard knowing he was already flat out. He's a quality act off road but a little short on condition, thank goodness.
I was gutted to find that I'd only finished 42nd, but bearing in mind I'd started literally in 100th place it wasn't so bad.
Two weekends away from racing through doing the Tour of Britain, then a silly 50mile TT, then back to it!
