So today, it was back to training after my recent health hiccup. Laying down some base as some would call it. In fact I don't subscribe to this base training thing really.......Base Bollox as JW calls it. This is because in my opinion, proper bike riders never let themselves become unfit, they may let their top end anaerobic tolerance deteriorate, but they never loose their basic capacity for work, in my case after three decades in the sport. No mater if its January or June, they can still knock out a couple of hours at twentyodd MPH. We're all different, but for me winter's just about getting out regularly and riding the bike briskly to keep warm and stay tough.
So another 100mins in freezing fog over heavy roads around Pennypot on the cx bike. In fact whilst I am on, if you haven't ever considered it, a cx bike makes the ultimate winter bike. If you leave my passion for cx aside, think about it......good light race bike with massive clearance for guards, cable routing that makes it dead easy to lube cables, bombproof wheels with aggressive treads at 32/34c. Lots of advantages to these tyres, lots of air in them so they don't puncture so easily, they smooth out rough frost bitten roads, aggressive tread means you don't have to ride with clenched buttock cheeks when there's a bit of snow down and......get this, they mean you go a little slower so you don't get quite so far from home, don't get quite so much wind-chill and thus stay a hint warmer.
